Lecterns: Melbourne - Echuca & onto the world stage
Lectern Australia is servicing the world from its Murray Valley Highway factory in Echuca. Owners Chris and Mary Parks moved to the Campaspe Shire in Northern Victoria mid-2004 for a taste of country living – what they found was enough opportunity to create niches within niches.
Eighty per cent of revenue comes from the manufacture of high-quality lecterns in aluminium, steel and timber, in contemporary designs. These can be customised, with logos, control systems for microphones, lighting and air conditioning.
When Qantas needed a lectern to support three A4 books open, they received one with wings. The Air Force asked for blue and the Army wanted a camouflage finish. Other customers include the Prime Minister’s office, major international hotels, police, higher education, and the hire industry. The company also sells widely into Europe, the United Kingdom, the US and Asia.
Originally an audio engineer, Chris has designed weatherproof outdoor speakers. The company has now moved into a variety of niches: jukebox and karaoke hire, touch-screen technology, and hire and installation of home theatres. “Our outdoor theatre set-ups for places such as the deck of houseboats and private pools will allow people to enjoy swim-in or sit-in movies.
The Parks family moved their company based in Tullamarine for “warmth and a nicer environment with proximity to the city”, said Mary.
The Parks are a good example of businesses moving to Campaspe. The Shire working with State Government is promoting the “Make it Happen in Provincial Victoria” Campaign at Melbourne families to move to country Victoria.
“We are marketing our region to attract families, new investment and new businesses to relocate. The benefits are more jobs and more opportunities for our communities. Lecturns Australia are a great example of this Live, Work & Invest message”, said Katrina Tehan Economic Development Manager.
This summer, Melbournians holidaying in the Goulburn Murray region were encouraged to stay – for good, through the “You came to play – why don’t you stay” promotional fax sheets available at Visitor Information Centers and accommodation providers.
