Migrant Relocation

What do I need to arrange for the relocation of skilled migrants?

Contacting your RMIF Coordinator prior to the recruitment phase can assist with making the transition easier on both you and your new employee.
Before the recruitment phase, you can request detailed information about the potential skilled migrant and their families to ensure that their transition into your workplace will be smooth. The following is a list of considerations that you can discuss with the the local Skilled Migration Coordinator prior to employing a skilled migrant:

  • Can all of the needs of the family be met in this region, including schooling, places of worship, special needs?
  • What qualifications and experience does the spouse (if any) have and are those skills in demand in our region, should the spouse decide to also seek employment?
  • Does the migrant have an understanding of the region - have they researched the facilities and services the region has to offer?
  • How will other employees in your workplace react to the employment of a skilled migrant? Do you need to arrange some cultural awareness training through the Skilled Migration Coordinator to ease the transition in the workplace?
  • Will the skilled migrant require any specific vocational training, and are there educational facilities available in your region to provide that training?
  • Is there English language tuition available for spouse and family members, and can the family afford the cost of such lessons?
  • Will transportation be an issue to and from work? Will you need to advise potential employees that they may require a motor vehicle and driver’s licence to work in your industry?
  • What are the specific skills requirements for your skills shortage positions?

Careful planning can assist with reducing any issues in relation to settlement. Some useful tips that may assist you:

  • Arrange for the skilled migrant to receive a Migrant Resource CD-ROM from the RMIF Coordinator. The Migrant Resource kit contains valuable information for skilled migrants and their families in relation to employment, education, health facilities, and rental accommodation and so on.
  • Refer the skilled migrant to all the matters contained in the pre-arrival section of the DVD, which include accommodation, schools and so on, as well as any particular requirements pertinent to their circumstances.
