Driving in Victoria
In order to drive a motor vehicle in Victoria you must have
a valid licence. You must also obey many road laws, which are
available at your local VicRoads office. You should familiarise
yourself with the road laws prior to driving a motor vehicle.
If you contravene any road laws, you may incur a fine or a
criminal charge against your name which may affect the status
of your visa.
Some basic laws are as follows :
- You
should carry your driver’s
licence on you when driving a motor vehicle.
- The
motor vehicle must have a current and valid registration.
(go
to Vicroads)
- You
should obey the speed limits. Speed limits are generally
50 km/h for residential areas,
60 km/h for other areas
and then on non-residential roads, 100 km/h to 110 km/h.
- You
cannot drink alcohol and drive if you are over the legal
limit. For more information
into safe consumption
of alcohol whilst driving, you should visit www.dms.dpc.vic.gov.au
- You
should check with VicRoads for appropriate child restraints/seats
if you have children.
- All
occupants of a motor vehicle must wear safety belts in
a car at all times.
This is not an exhaustive list of the laws that apply to motorists
and you should contact your local VicRoads office to ensure
that you are familiar with the laws in your state. Further,
laws differ between States, so you should familiarise yourself
with their laws prior to driving interstate.
