Step 1
We hope that your relocation to the Goulburn Murray region
is a happy and permanent one. In order to do so, it is important
to carefully consider the information below to ensure that
you have considered and investigated all things necessary for
a smooth and successful transition. Including in the list below
are some important considerations.
1. Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA)
Ensure that all visa requirements have been met, and that
you have a valid visa that allows you to work in Victoria.
Make sure you understand all restrictions that apply to you
in relation to your visa.

2. Make contact the Goulburn Murray Regional Migration Coordinator
The Goulburn Murray Regional Migration Coordinator can assist
you with information and referrals in relation to employment
and settlement issues.

3. Ensure that you can work in your chosen field in Victoria.
To do this, you will need to check if there are any regulating
industry bodies for your chosen profession. In some industries,
if you are not eligible for registration with your relevant
regulating industry body in Australia, you cannot work in your
chosen profession.

There may be a process to obtain necessary registration to
work in your chosen occupation. You may also be required to
undertake some further study prior to registration. The Overseas
Qualifications Unit should be able to provide information on
how long you need to study, and approximate costs of study.
If you are required to study, you should factor these costs,
and the loss of income during that period, into your budget.
4. Make sure that you understand the conditions of your employment
Clarify with your employer if there are any probationary periods
(for example a three month trial, after which your employment
may or may not end, depending on your performance). Talk to
your employer about what your salary will be after tax, and
after any necessary deductions, so that you are certain of
how much money you will have left, at your disposal, each week
or fortnight.

properties

Some Real Estate Agents may also have listings for short term,
temporary, fully furnished accommodation, until such time as
you can get established in your own home.
You may also consider caravan parks with onsite vans as a
temporary form of accommodation, and you should contact your
local Visitor Information Centre in this regard.
6. Motor vehicle
Consider whether or not you will require a motor vehicle to
travel to and from work. Whilst there is some public transport
available in the larger cities (Shepparton, Echuca, Cobram),
there may not be public transport available where you live,
and unless you live within walking distance of your place of
employment, or you have a vehicle supplied as part of your
salary package, you will need a car.

7. Consider your finances resources carefully
It is likely
that you will not be entitled to any financial assistance
from the Australian Government. You will therefore
be entirely financial responsible for yourself and your family,
if applicable until you commence work, or until you find work.
You will need to pay for a number of items to settle in, particularly
furniture, four weeks rent and bond (a further four weeks rent)
in advance and possibly a motor vehicle (see Establishing
your new home)
8. Look into education facilities for your children
It is important
to consider your children’s education
if you are relocating to Australia. The following education
